Description: Thallus of erect axes, subdichotomously branched, tapering upwardly, ecorticate, multinucleate. Procarps on subapical cells of axes with 4-celled carpogonial branches borne on second (supporting cell) of 2 pericentral cells. Auxiliary cell, cut off from supporting cell, producing carposporophyte with usually 3 successively developed groups of carposporangia. Some fusion of associated cells and an involucre of filaments. Spermatangial heads on cells of erect axes. Polysporangia on upper axial cells with 8-16 spores reproducing sexual plants. Monosporangia pedicillate on axial cells, asexual, on both sporophyte and gametophyte plants. Removed from Corynospora J. Agardh for which only monosporangiate plants are known. Sexual phases and monosporangia studied in field and culture. Polysporangia somewhat larger in culture plants.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
