Description: Cells solitary, free-swimming, somewhat metabolic, markedly flattened when seen from the side and irregularly ellipsoid, ovate or pyriform in face view. The single emergent flagellum is inserted ventrally at some distance from the anterior end. Protoplast with 1-3 contractile vacuoles, 1-2 chloroplasts and often with a stigma; pyrenoids apparently absent. One species is colorless but contains a stigma. Cell division by longitudinal division while the cells are actively swimming or sometimes in a non-motile state. Daughter cells may be united by mucilage for some time, forming small colonies consisting of up to 16 cells. Stomatocysts known from one species. All species rarely observed, mostly in plankton of freshwater lakes, but also known from bog springs. The taxonomic position of Monochrysis is uncertain. It is possibly related to Chromulina and Phaeaster but also resembles the prymnesiophycean genus Pavlova (Pavlova lutheri has originally been described as Monochrysis lutheri, see Green 1975); the colorless species of Monochrysis resembles Peltomonas.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
