Description: Plants solitary, epiphytic or saxicolous, polysiphonous; holdfasts of tightly clumped rhizoids cut off from basal pericentral or cortical cells; pericentral cells four to nine, ecorticate or corticate; branches mostly exogenous, some lateral branches cicatrigenous, sometimes arising in connection with trichoblast; trichoblasts moderately developed on apex of branchlets, one on each segment, spirally arranged, slender, elongate, simple or forked, deciduous, often leaving conspicuous scar-cells; procarps with three-celled carpogonial branch, cystocarps scattered on branchlets, not aggregated, narrow globose or ovate, very shortly pedicellate; spermatangial branches arising from one fork of trichoblast, cylindrical, sometimes with sterile tip; tetrasporangia tetrahedral, forming spiral series in upper branchlets

The genera Melanothamnus Bornet & Falkenberg and Vertebrata S.F. Gray constitute well-defined clades of the red algal tribe Polysiphonieae (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales).
