Description: Thalli erect, arising from a matted rhizoidal holdfast up to 40 cm long, dichotomous, much branched, branches 0.5-13 mm broad. Growth initiated by a protruding apical cell terminating each branch. Thallus composed of an outermost layer of small cortical cells, monostromatic in the upper thallus, becoming polystromatic in the lower thallus, overlying a larger medullary cell layer. Medullary cell layer monostromatic, sometimes polystromatic at thallus margins. Sporangia solitary or in small groups scattered down the central portion on both surfaces of the upper thallus branches. Gametophytes dioecious. Oogonial and antheridial sori scattered down the central portion of each blade. Allender and Kraft described Pachydictyon aegerrime from a single specimen collected at Lord Howe Is. on the basis of 2 layers of cortical cells at the thallus margins. It must be considered a doubtful taxon. Japan, California, Baja California, Panama, southern Australia, Lord Howe Is.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
