Description: Thallus recumbent to erect, growing from a discoid holdfast, often with several fronds growing from a common holdfast, or tangled among other algae with no obvious holdfast, with 1 or more percurrent axes that are richly alternately branched. Axes compressed to flattened, with inrolled apices. Structure uniaxial; each axial cell producing 3 or 4 periaxial cells, the first arising alternately and forming the primary filament of lateral branches. Medulla pseudoparenchymatous, consisting of large cells, grading to a smaller-celled cortex with prominent vesicular cells. Spermatangia borne in nemathecia on outer cortical cells. Carpogonial branches 3- or 4-celled; basal cell conspicuously enlarged; auxiliary cell branches 3 (–4) celled. Following fertilisation, carpogonial branch cells distal to the basal cell fusing, issuing 1 or 2 connecting filaments that fuse laterally with auxiliary cells. Gonimoblast initials arising from diploidised auxiliary cells and developing thallus-outward among nemathecial filaments, forming compartments of densely clustered carposporangia surrounded by a pericarp in swollen nemathecial areas. Tetrasporangia in nemathecia along margins and the faces of axes and laterals, irregularly zonately-cruciately divided [after Payo et al. (2011); Guiry & Guiry (2017)].

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
