Description: Stipe cylindrical, remaining filiform or gradually expanding into a flat, linear, lanceolate or flabellate thallus, dichotomously, subdichotomously, pinnately, or proliferously branched, mostly from margins, to two to four or more orders. Different orders of branches usually of similar widths, sometimes constricted or stipitate at base. Rigid or cartilaginous. Holdfast discoid. Medulla densely filamentous. Cortex tightly packed, of spherical to elliptical cells, progressively smaller toward cuticle or an abrupt size difference between relatively thick inner and outer layers. Secondary pit connections present. Growth rings in stipes of some species suggest they are perennial. Reproductive structures occurring in ultimate segments, in lateral proliferous branches or in specially developed small proliferations. Dioecious. Ampullae with up to two orders of branches. Carpogonial branch 2-celled, on primary ampullar filament. Hypogynous cell can have short, sterile lateral, apparently fusing with carpogonium after fertilization. Auxiliary cell in separate ampulla, intercalary, usually in the primary filament. Connecting filament may contact more than one auxiliary cell. Auxiliary cell cutting off a single gonimoblast initial outwardly. Cystocarp compact, of many small carposporangia, embedded in thallus. Pericarp of ampullar cells, derivatives of ampullar cells, and vegetative cells. Small fusion cell formed. Carpostome present. Spermatangia superficial, cut off by primarily oblique walls. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia cruciate, attached subbasally to intermediate cortical layer.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
