Description: Plants heterotrichous, consisting of uniseriate, irregularly branched filaments, with prostrate filaments sometimes very dense and pseudoparenchymatous. Cells with single parietal chloroplast and a pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction various. Swollen cells produce 4 or 8 ovoid, quadriflagellate zoospores. Aplanospores and zoospores often produced in 2 or 4-celled sarcinoid packets of swollen cells, pleurococcoid in appearance. Akinetes also produced. Sexual reproduction unknown. Pseudendoclonium isolated from various surfaces collected in freshwater and marine habitats, occasionally from soil. All the freshwater species described from isolates studied in laboratory culture. Characters used to distinguish species include dimensions of cells, discernability of original primary filament in mature plants, degree of development of branching systems, relative development of erect and prostrate systems, and whther prostrate axes become secondarily erect. Zoospore ultrastructure studied in several species. Square or diamond-shaped surface scales present on zoospores of P. basiliense var. brandii and P. akinetum but absent on the marine species P. submarinum. In this latter species a basal body lies perpendicular to long axis of zoospore, whereas configuration in P. akinetum is V-shaped. Inconsistencies in ultrastructural features of the few investigated species inevitably casts doubt on whether the genus represents a natural grouping. Fine structural details of flagellated stage suggest possible affinities with Ulotrichales.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
