Radiocystis Skuja, 1948

Holotype species: Radiocystis geminata Skuja

Original publication and holotype designation: Skuja, H. (1948). Taxonomie des Phytoplanktons einiger Seen in Uppland, Schweden. Symbolae Botanicae Upsalienses 9(3): 1-399, 39 pls.

Description: Unicellular-colonial; colonies more or less spherical or slightly irregularly oval, microscopic, to 100 _m diam., free-living, enveloped by very fine, colorless and diffluent mucilage, with more or less radially oriented cells in short, variable rows, which are usually slightly disordered; cells separated slightly from one another, sometimes in pairs (after division). In the center of colony and in old colonies the rows of cells are sometimes not clearly distinct. Cells spherical to widely oval (particularly before division), with pale blue-green content, sometimes with rarely occurring aerotopes. Cells divide crosswise in one plane in subsequent generations and the daughter cells remain after division often longer time near one to another. Reproduction by the dissociation of colonies. The type species occurs commonly in plankton of the nordic lakes in the Europe, northern Japan and North America. This species is often reported from other regions, especially the temperate zone, but also from tropical countries. The genotypic identity of such populations with the type species should be proved.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
