Description: Plants epiphytic, attached by a penetrating base, spherical and solid when young, later becoming hollow, inflated, membranous, yellowish brown, up to 10 cm in diameter, polystichous, composed of inner large colorless cells and smaller pigmented peripheral cells. Unilocular sporangia in discrete, punctate sori associated with multicellular paraphyses and phaeophycean hairs, scattered on whole thalli, up to 100 _m in length. Each cell contains many disc-shaped chloroplasts with pyrenoids. Wynne (1969) cultured materials from California and showed heteromorphic life history. Unispores from field plants germinated into prostrate branched filaments forming uniseriate plurilocular sporangia. Plurispores developed into plethysmothalli forming plurilocular sporangia or parenchymatous globose macrothallus, although it did not mature. Sexual reproduction not confirmed. Distributed in cold and temperate water area of North Pacific Ocean. Summer annual.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
