Description: Thallus upright, pale pink to red/orange, calcified, slightly lubricous, attached by a discoid holdfast, dichotomously branched. Axes terete to compressed (collapsing when dried and appearing flattened), with slight transverse striations. Structure multiaxial, with a central medulla of longitudinally aligned filaments giving rise to anticlinal, dichotomously to polychotomously divided assimilatory filaments that form a loose cortex; proximal cells of assimilatory filaments cylindrical, mid cells markedly inflated, several times the diameter of proximal cells; outer 2-4 cortical cells becoming narrower, with epidermal cells ellipsoid or clavate. Plants dioecious. Spermatangia arising singly or in pairs on spermatangial mother cells borne on outer cortical cells. Carpogonial branches 2-6 cells, borne laterally on inner cortical supporting cells, generally in sori. Unfertilized carpogonial branches cutting off a vegetative filament that arises from the hypogynous cell and grows through or closely associated with the carpogonium, if the former it eventually emerges from the carpogonium/trichogyne wall and forms a normal cortical filament. Post-fertilization carpogonium dividing transversely, with the upper daughter cell producing lateral, highly branched, gonimoblast filaments, these coursing through the cortical filaments. Outer cortical cells in the vicinity of the young carposporophyte resuming growth, forming unbranched or sparsely branched nemathecial filaments. Cells of the carpogonial branch and cortical filaments in the immediate vicinity producing post fertilization, horizontally spreading subsidiary filaments that can grow towards the surface and form paraphyses amongst the cystocarpic nemathecium. Mature cystocarp comprising a circular patch of paraphyses with intermingled, horizontally spreading, gonimoblast filaments, these producing anticlinal filaments with terminal, ellipsoid carposporangia. Tetrasporophyte and tetrasporangia unknown.
