Description: Life history diplohaplontic with alternation of large sporophyte bearing unilocular meiosporangia with paraphyses (sori) and microscopic dioecious and oogamous, heteromorphous gametophytes (for detail, see Laminaria). Sporophyte perennial (life-span unknown), composed of holdfast with branched haptera, short primitive stipe not elongating but thickening, and fan-shaped, spirally twisted, perforated partial blades which develop after the juvenile blade disintegrates in the center. The latter only leaves 2 basal meristematic margins inrolled. One margin ceases to develop, the other margin starts to grow becoming stipe-like and bearing its one-sided characteristic blade. The branching of Thallassiophyllum is thus a pseudo-branching. Numerous secondary branches with small blades arising along the thickened margins occur. Sori develop as irregular dark brown areas on blade surface. Mucilage canals absent. Structure of sporophyte as in Laminaria composed of photosynthetic meristoderm, parenchymatic cortex and central medulla.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
