Description: Foliose, entire or lobed, perforate or not, occasionally spinose, usually about as broad as tall. Subsessile or with short stipe. Holdfast discoid. Medulla predominantly filamentous but including many-armed isodiametric cells and stellate cells, which can contain refractive material. Cortex thin; cortical cells isodiametric, progressively smaller toward cuticle. Dioecious, where known. One or more 3-celled carpogonial branches borne on supporting cell with subsidiary cells. After fertilization, carpogonial fusion cell producing gonimoblast filaments that contact auxiliary cells on separate branches. Auxiliary cell ovoid, with 3-8 subspherical to ovoid subsidiary cells. Carposporangia in groups, intermixed with filaments. Cystocarps immersed. Spermatangia superficial. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia small, cruciate, scattered in cortex.
