Nomenclatural notes
The genus name and orthography has been conserved against the original spelling "Hildenbrandtia". Named for Franz Xaver Edler von Hildenbrand (1789-1849), physician and lichenologist at Vienna. - (15 May 2011) - M.D. Guiry

Description: Thallus prostrate, forming a crust on rock. Leathery. Lower surface fully adherent to substratum. Rhizoids lacking. Basal layer of filaments giving rise to crowded, closely coherent vertical filaments that are sparsely branched. Horizontal stratification sometimes apparent. Adjacent cells joined to one another by secondary pit connections formed without conjunctor cells. Cells cylindrical, varying little in diameter, ca. 5 µm. Thallus surface smooth and firm. Cells uninucleate. Chloroplast single per cell. Pit plugs with a cap membrane, but lacking outer cap layer. Gametangia unknown. Tetrasporangia formed in pit-like conceptacles scattered over the thallus surface. Conceptacles spherical or cylindrical with an ostiole, or an open cavity. Tetrasporangia formed on floor and sides of conceptacles. Conceptacles enlarged by repeated rounds of conversion of vegetative cells lining conceptacle chamber into tetrasporangia. Tetrasporangia fundamentally zonately divided, with parallel transverse cleavage or parallel oblique cleavage or non-parallel oblique cleavage. Walls of discharged tetrasporangia often persistent. Paraphyses absent.

Comments: Fungal hyphae commonly present in walls and conceptacles, especially in high intertidal thalli. Freshwater species reproducing by vegetative propagules rather than spores. A predominantly marine genus, but with a widely distributed freshwater species. Marine species found in tropical, temperate, and subpolar waters and ranging from high intertidal to subtidal zones.
