Description: Erect, filamentous/"trichoid" phase multiseriate, flat, a few mm in length, arising from a monostromatic, prostrate/"peltoid" phase. Margins of the encrusting "peltoid" phase are continuous. Pit plugs absent Growth diffuse, but may be apical in the early stages of development. Life history heteromorphic, consisting of an alternation between the "trichoid" phase and "peltoid" phase. Asexual reproduction by monospores which can be produced by both the erect and prostrate phases. Monosporangium formation is initiated by an unequal cytokinesis of a vegetative cell. Sexual reproduction present. Erect thalli are monoecious gametophytes. Spermatangia form by an unequal cytokinesis of a vegetative cell. The smaller of the two resulting cells forms a spermatangium that releases a single spermatium. Carpogonia have short trichogynes. Following fertilization each carpogonium forms a zygotosporanium that releases a single zygotospore which germinates and grows into the prostrate/"peltoid" phase, that in turn gives rise to the erect filamentous/"trichoid" phase. Meiosis presumably somatic.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
