Description: Thallus with prostrate and erect axes, generally forming spreading tufts; some species to 7–10 cm tall, but mostly less than 2 cm, dark red to orange or yellow (often variable within a single thallus), attached by clusters of rhizoids. Erect axes slender, wiry, cartilaginous, cylindrical or slightly compressed, variously branched but distichous when well developed. Apices with a prominent apical cell, but axial filament becoming obscure; medulla of numerous longitudinal filaments and a cortex of 1–3 layers of pigmented ellipsoidal cells. Life history probably triphasic, with isomorphic gametophytes and tetrasporophytes; most species known only with tetrasporangia. Cystocarps reported but not well known. Spermatangia in subterminal sori, cut off from outer cortical cells. Tetrasporangia in swollen often elongate apical portions of axes or short stichidioid branches, irregularly arranged, lying within the inner cortex and outer medulla, tetrahedrally, decussately-cruciately or irregularly divided.
