Alsidium C., 1827: 639
Holotype species: Alsidium corallinum C.Agardh
Original publication and holotype designation:Agardh, C.A. (1827). Aufzählung einiger in den östreichischen Ländern gefundenen neuen Gattungen und Arten von Algen, nebst ihrer Diagnostik und beigefügten Bemerkungen. Flora 10(40): 625-640.
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Description: Upright radially organized polysiphonous thalli, up to 15 cm high, with cylindrical axes and progressively narrower distal branches. Branch apices abruptly tapering; trichoblasts spirally arranged on axis, present on every segment but soon deciduous; parenchymatous cortication occurring to near branch apex. 6-8 pericentral cells. Lateral polysiphonous branches originate from trichoblast basal cell. Reproductive structures on ultimate branchlets. Tetrasporangia borne, 1 per segment, in a spiral sequence, commonly causing distortion of stichidia. Cystocarps spheroidal to urceolate, lateral on ultimate branchlets. Male capitula replacing trichoblasts, conical and sometimes with sterile tips.
Comments: Low littoral to subtidal, Mediterranean; the Pacific Ocean at Palmyra Is. (Dawson 1959), The Galapagos Is. (Dawson 1963) and The Philippines (Vannajan and Trono 1978).

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
