Cryptogamie Algologie 38(2): 79-132, 126 figs.

Description: Foliose, orbiculate, entire, irregularly lobed to more or less palmately divided. Stipe short. Holdfast small, discoid. Medulla of large, isodiametric cells interspersed with branched filaments of small, pigmented cells. Cortex relatively thin, of isodiametric cells, progressively smaller toward cuticle. One or more 3-celled carpogonial branches borne on supporting cell, usually with additional subsidiary cells, which sometimes bear further cells. After fertilization, connecting filaments issuing from fusion cell involving supporting cell and subsidiary cells and fusing with separate auxiliary cell, which can also bear carpogonial branches and subsidiary cells. Carposporangia formed in clusters at ends of branches of gonimoblast filaments, which develop attached to the auxiliary cell. Cystocarp protruding slightly. Pericarp and carpostome lacking. Spermatangia undescribed. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia small, cruciate, scattered in cortex.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
