Description: Thalli upright, dorsiventral, up to 40 cm tall, polysiphonous with periclinal divisions of two opposite pericentral cells forming alae on axes. Branch apices, and sometimes margins, inrolled to ventral side. Entire thallus corticated but the 6 pericentral cells becoming more thickly corticated forming midrib and lateral veins. Trichoblasts formed on dorsal side of midrib on most segments; often of few cells and not emergent; if emergent, vesiculate in early stages; highly branched and soon deciduous. Endogenously developed laterals formed in regular opposite sequence forming vein in alae, and sometimes ending in small, oppositely arranged teeth on margin of alae, especially prominent in one species, K. natalensis. Large branches endogenously produced by extension of marginal vein or teeth. Reproductive structures on specially developed small branchlets, on veins or on adaxial side of marginal tooth, sometimes in clusters. Tetrasporangia in curved stichidia, two sporangia per segment on opposite pericentral cells, forming two opposite rows. Cystocarps usually single per branchlet, spheroidal with very short stalk. Male branchlet branched several times, spermatangial capitula replacing trichoblasts.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.

Comments: Three species in southern and western Australia, 1 species in South Africa. Characterized by its opposite branchlets, veins or teeth, 6 pericentrals and formation of marginal alae. Studies needed on development and reproductive characters, especially gametophytes.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
