Description: Plants epilithic, caespitose, simple, solid when young, later becoming hollow, terete, up to 15 cm in height and 1 mm in diameter, gradually attenuated at the base, light to dark brown, composed of medulla of large thick walled colorless cells, and cortex of small pigmented cells. Long uniseriate assimilatory filament develop from the cortex. Growth parenchymatous, with single apical cell in the juvenile stage. Unilocular or plurilocular sporangia formed on separate erect thalli. In unilocular sporangial plants, cortex giving rise to emergent sporangia and superficial multicellular paraphyses. Plurilocular sporangia formed from the cortical cells, uniseriate or biseriate, terminated with a sterile cell in each files. Each cells contain a single parietal chloroplast with prominent pyrenoid. Unilocular sporangial plants often dominant in the field. Phaeophycean hairs present. Unispores normally biflagellated containing a chloroplast with a stigma. Unispores germinate to develop into discoidal aggregate from which erect polystichous thalli directly arise. Reproductive structures not formed on the disc. Endemic in temperate water area of northwestern Pacific. Annual.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
