Description: Plants reach 20 cm in length and consist of flattened, linear, subdichotomous blades, with or without marginal proliferations, borne directly or with a short terete stalk on a crustose base. Spermatangia form in sori on the major axes. Procarps are aggregated into a long, linear sorus running interruptedly down the centers of the blades like a midrib, the cystocarps developing within the sori as a more-or-less continuous fruiting body. Pericarps differentiate along the "midribs" and are faintly ostiolate. Tetrasporangial nemathecia form in patches scattered over the fronds.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as neuter.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.

Comments: Distribution: The type occurs from Britain to Morocco and the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic, from British Columbia to Baja California and Japan in the Pacific, and from numerous scattered localities in the Southern Hemisphere such as South Africa, southern Australia, New Zealand, and Chile (Ramirez and Rojas 1988). Plants generally occur on rock in subtidal habitats. The second species is rarely collected and endemic to southern Australia.

Furneaux & Miller (1985) have found that gel extracts of Stenogramma do not match the structure of any known carrageenan fraction.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
