Description: Plants reach 30 cm in length, are erect from a discoid holdfast, and are terete and irregularly and radially branched. Apices incorporate a limited number of apical cells whose successive derivatives cut off a single periaxial cell in orthostichous rows. Supporting cells of carpogonial branches are homologous to auxiliary cells, the auxiliary cell plus the 3-4 cortical cells pit-connected to it appearing enlarged and darkly staining, forming a distinct "auxiliary cell complex". Generally two connecting filaments, one in open connection, the other pit-connected, arise from the fertilized carpogonium. Diploidization of an auxiliary cell results in growth of surrounding filaments into an involucre and division of the gonimoblast into a central tissue in which gametophytic and gonimoblastic cells make isolated fusions but do not incorporate into a central fusion cell. Carposporangia form in short (1-3) unbranched files. 1-2 spermatangia are cut off from each of the 1-2 mother cells borne on outer cortical bearing cells over wide surfaces of the fronds. Tetrasporangia are cut off laterally from bearing cells. The vegetative and reproductive structure of Agardhiella are detailed by Gabrielson and Hommersand (1982), who establish the Tribe Agardhielleae for it.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
