Original publication and holotype designation: Fiore, J. (1975). A new generic name for Farlowiella onusta (Phaeophyta). Taxon 24: 497-498, no figs.

Precise date of publication: 16 Sep 1975

Description: Sporophyte filiform, simple or sparingly branched, to 12 cm tall, attached by a discoid rhizoidal base. Uniseriate when young becoming prenchymatous with a medulla of 4 large cells and a cortex of 1-2 layers of smaller cells. Trichothallic meristem at apex, often bearing one or more terminal true hairs; scattered hairs also arising from cortex. Chloroplasts discoid, with a pyrenoid. Reproduction by unilocular and plurilocular zoidangia which protrude from the cortex. Unispores developing as uniseriate gametophytes up to 3 mm tall with a discoid holdfast and alternate or opposite branches with terminal and lateral hairs. Sexual reproduction by dimorphic, large- or small- chambered plurilocular gametangia borne on separate plants, releasing gametes that fuse and develop as sporophytes.
