Description: Thallus cartilagenous, somewhat complanate when erect axes and branches are arranged in one plane, up to 15 cm high, arising from branched, recurved, stolon-like, creeping axes, attached to the substratum by numerous peg-like haptera of up to 0.5 mm in length. Erect axes are cylindrical at the base, progressively flattened above, ribbon-like in shape, of up to 6 mm in width, ending in lanceolate, blunt or truncate apices. Often the truncate ends exhibit ribbon-like proliferations similar in shape to the main axis but of narrower dimensions. They arise in numbers of two to four. The surface of the main axes and proliferations invested with longitudinally arranged rows of determinate, spatulate ramuli of up to 1.5 mm in length. On surface view the cortical cells are rounded to ovate, more or less arranged in tetrads, 4-7 µm diam. In cross section, the outer cortical cells are rounded, 4-8 µm diam., gradually grading into larger cortical cells and then into medullary cells, 5-12 µm diam. Elongated, colourless cells (rhizines or rhizoidal filaments) straight and congested in the medulla. Tetrasporangia irregularly arranged in sori, rounded on surface view, 18-25 µm diam. Tetrasporangial sori on small, determinate ramuli. Cystocarps on small determinate ramuli, bilocular, with one opening on each surface of the frond.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
