Description: Thallus with erect branching from decumbent rhizome-like base. Erect indeterminate axes sympodially developed and dorsiventrally organized, producing secondary branches from every sixth segment. Displaced primary axes adaxially producing from every second segment, 12 alternating dorsal and ventral short monopodial spine-like branches before halting growth. Indeterminate axes compressed and appearing winged in lower portions due to the overlap of spine-like branches on the margins. Short adventitious branches developing dorsally in the axils of some lateral branches, some of these becoming fertile. All axes ending in acute tips subtended by single swollen, undivided subterminal cells which often become deciduous, leaving the axes blunt. Axial cells surrounded by 6 periaxial cells in primary and secondary axes and as few as 4 in the tertiary axes. Periaxial cells quickly corticated by short descending rhizoidal filaments, collectively forming a thick cortex. Reproductive characteristics unknown. Several tetrahedral sporangia produced in successive whorls on pseudolaterals forming lanceolate stichidia with polysiphonous stalks. Tetrasporangia only partially enclosed.

Comments: Norris (1993) reported gland-like, densely staining cells near the tips of spine-like, terminal branches or near the distal end of polysiphonous axes bearing uniseriate tips. These cell are always produced singly.

A genus known only from the Indian Ocean—from the reefs off the Chagos and Aldabra Islands and Natal (South Africa).
