Named for Auguste-Jean-Marie Bachelot de la Pylaie (1786-1856), a well-known explorer and naturalist at the time Bory de Saint-Vincent chose to honour him; in later life he was best known for his archaeological contributions. Although the family name was spelled Bachelot de la Pilaie, after about 1820, he signed himself B. de la Pylaie or simply De la Pylaie (Silva et al. 1999). There has been a lot of dispute about the precise spelling of the epithet derived from his name, which culminated in the spelling "Pylaiella" being conserved (Silva, Lamy & Loiseaux-de Goër 1999). Description: The macrothallus is initially a uniseriate filament without a terminal true hair. Later it becomes parenchymatous by the formation of few longitudinal divisions. Branching is monopodial and true hairs are also absent on later developmental stages. Plurilocular and unilocular sporangia are formed by simple transformation of vegetative cells and the placing of the sporangia is only slightly localized. Growth is diffuse intercalary or slightly localized. Each cell contains several disc -shaped chloroplasts each with a pyrenoid.
The branching pattern of the species within the genus varies. Branches may be opposite or scattered in P. littoralis and P. gardneri or initially secund later in a bundle from 2-4 successive cells in P. varia. The more or less frequent formation of longitudinal walls justifies its position amongst parenchymatous brown algae. Longitudinal walls are especially frequent in loose-lying forms; these may occur in masses and create an environmental problem in some places (Wilce 1982). The species referable to Pylaiella show great phenotypic plasticity resulting in controversy about the number of species.The most recent alteration to this page was made on 20 Jun 2014 by M.D. Guiry.
