Eckloniopsis Okamura, 1927

Holotype species: Eckloniopsis radicosa (Kjellman) Okamura

Currently accepted name for the type species: Ecklonia radicosa (Kjellman) Okamura

Original publication and holotype designation: Okamura, K. (1927). Icones of Japanese algae. Vol. V pp. 135-180, Plates CCXXXVI-CCXLV. Tokyo: published by the author.

Description: Life history diplohaplontic with alternation of large sporophyte bearing unilocular meiosporangia with paraphyses (sori) and microscopic dioecious and oogamous, heteromorphous gametophytes (for detail, see Laminaria). Sporophytes annual, composed of holdfast with branched, filamentous hapteres, a short stipe and a ruffled blade with slight or no marginal pinnate lobes. Meristematic region situated at transition region between stipe and blade. Sori develop on both surfaces of blade as irregular patches in the median portion and at the base of lobes from July onwards. Haploid chromosome number is c. 30. Mucilage canals in stipe and blade. Genus has affinity to Eisenia and Ecklonia. Hybridization experiments proved interfertility between Eckloniopsis radicosa and 2 Ecklonia species (Migita 1985). Structure of sporophyte as in Laminaria composed of photosynthetic meristoderm, parenchymatic cortex and central medulla.

Information kindly contributed by I. Bartsch but may now be outdated.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ecklonia.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Rothman, M.D., Mattio, L., Wernberg, T., Anderson, R.J., Uwai, S., Mohring, M.B. & Bolton, J.J. (2015). A molecular investigation of the genus Ecklonia (Phaeophyceae, Laminariales) with special focus on the southern hemisphere. Journal of Phycology 51(2): 236-246.

Comments: Genus endemic to the middle and southern Pacific coasts of Japan; growing subtidally on rocks.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
