Cruoriella P.L. Crouan & H.M. Crouan, 1859

Holotype species: Cruoriella armorica P.Crouan & H.Crouan

Currently accepted name for the type species: Peyssonnelia armorica (P.Crouan & H.Crouan) Weber Bosse

Description: Plants are generally less than 2 cm in breadth and are virtually identical in habit, structure and reproduction to many species of the genus Peyssonnelia, the sole distinguishing feature being the extremely soft and mucilaginous texture of the fronds and the ease with which the constituent filaments separate under pressure. Denizot (1968) has investigated type material of Cruoriella and Cruoriopsis, which he finds to be synonymous, and has reviewed the considerable taxonomic confusion that attends these entities. Abbott and Hollenberg (1976) provisionally recognize Cruoriopsis, but at least 5 former members of Cruoriopsis are still unable to be placed in a satisfactory genus.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Comments: Distribution: The type species grows on shells at varying depths in the British Isles, Atlantic France, and the Mediterranean Sea. Other species occur in Japan (3 species), Pacific North America from Washington to Mexico, the Red Sea, Sumatra and New Caledonia.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
