Description: Thallus perennial, to about 1 m long. Holdfast composed of prostrate flattened portion of stipe with branched haptera along lateral margins. Stipe unbranched, curving upward from holdfast and bearing a single blade. Blades linear to sublinear, 15-25 cm in maximum width, rounded at base and tapering slightly at distal end, with a midrib. Surface of blade, except the midrib, with a coarse network of narrow ridges. The blade, with subtending stipe, splits longitudinally during development to form 2 blades, each with a subtending stipe. In this way, the stipe may become or more times dichotomous. The blade splits longitudinally through the midrib and each new blade regenerates a new half-blade. Spores produced in unilocular sporangia with paraphyses in irregularly shaped sori, which occur between reticulations of the blade, or at times covering the midrib. Gametophytes dimorphic, dioecious, oogamous, branched uniseriate filaments.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyoneurum.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Lane, C.E., Mayes, C., Druehl, L.D. & Saunders, G.W. (2006). A multi-gene molecular investigation of the kelp (Laminariales, Phaeophyceae) supports substantial taxonomic re-organization. Journal of Phycology 42: 493-512.

Comments: This taxon occurs on the Pacific coast of North America and is easily distinguished, but may be closely related to Dictyoneurum. Dictyoneuropsis occurs in sheltered waters while Dictyoneurum occurs on more exposed shores. Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of chloroplast DNA of Dictyoneuropsis and Dictyoneurum show no differences for the restriction sites tested. Dictyoneuropsis has been hybridized in the laboratory with Pelagophycus and Dictyoneurum.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
