Description: Thallus erect and bushy, proximal branches thickened by cortication and mostly bare of branches; distal branches thin with light cortication and covered by spirally arranged pigmented trichoblasts, one per segment. Polysiphonous, 5 pericentrals, and monopodial, branching often alternate; branches arising from basal cells of trichoblasts (Lawson & John 1987). Trichoblasts subdichotomously divided in one plane, with subulate terminal cells. Gametophytes (Joly & Oliveira F. 1966) producing distal fertile branches; male capitula cylindrical with a terminal sterile group of cells, in groups on basal cells of trichoblasts; cystocarps on short polysiphonous stalks that become corticated, large and spheroid with a prominent, sometimes rostrate, ostiole; tetrasporangia in spiral series, one per segment, in ultimate ramuli, with somewhat smaller trichoblasts present, one per segment, on sporangia-bearing segments.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.

Comments: Tropical to subtropical western Atlantic from North Carolina to Venezuela and Brazil, eastern Atlantic in Ghana; Pacific Mexico (Dawson 1963); southern Australia. Differing from Brongniartella mainly by the number of pericentral cells and presence of thick cortication; in need of detailed study.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
