Type designated in: Ishijima, W. (1954). Cenozoic coralline algae from the western Pacific. pp. 1-87. Tokyo: Yuhodo Company.

Description: Thalli comprising loosely attached crusts <200 um thick and 2-3 (-5) cells thick lacking protuberances; often overgrowing one another, or unattached. Haustoria lacking. Organized in two types of filaments (dimerous), the first-order filaments (primigenous filaments) forming a unistratose layer of elongate cells (palisade cells) and the second-order filaments (postigenous filaments) growing from the first-order filaments and oriented about at right angles to the substrate. Second-order filaments sometimes consisting only of small epithallial cells (in which case thallus is 2 cells thick). Outermost walls of epithallial cells rounded or flattened, not flared. Cells in contiguous filaments sometimes joined by fusions; secondary pit-connections unknown. Trichocytes sometimes present singly or in groups; present as terminal cells of filaments or arising from cells in first-order filaments. Reproductive cells forming within protruding uniporate conceptacles. Roofs of tetrasporangial conceptacles produced from filaments interspersed among sporangia. Apical sporangial plugs absent. Bisporangia not reported. Sexual plants dioecious. Roofs formed by overarching filaments from around the developing gametangia. Carpogonia and spermatangia produced on the floors of the chambers.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Athanasiadis, A. (2016). Phycologia Europaea Rhodophyta Vol. I. pp. [i]-xxxxviii, 1-762. Thessaloniki: Published and distributed by the author.

Comments: Because species concepts in Lithoporella have not been elucidated the distribution of the genus is not known. Lithoporella and Mastophora appear to be the most closely related genera in the Mastophorioideae, and vegetatively there appear to be no significant differences. However, the roofs of tetrasporangial conceptacles in Lithoporella form from filaments interspersed among the sporangia and a columella is lacking. On the other hand, in Mastophora the roofs are produced by filaments surrounding the fertile cells, and a central sterile columella is present.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
