Description: Plants epiphytic on other algae, filiform, cylindrical, up to 6 cm in height and 0.5 mm in diameter, branched, parenchymatous, solid, partly uniseriate and partly multiseriate, often terminated with phaeophycean hair, composed of inner layer consisting of colorless large inner cells and cortical layer consisting of pigmented cells. Cells of outermost layer clavate or irregularly shaped, protruding from the surface. Unilocular sporangia ovoid, 60-70 _m in diameter protruded from the surface. Plurilocular sporangia formed among peripheral cells, often in sori. Phaeophycean hairs scattered. Distributed in South American cold water area. Heteromorphic but monophasic life history reported. Plurispores from macrothalli develop into fertile or sterile hecatonematoid microthalli, which form new macrothalli forming plurilocular sporangia (Asensi 1976).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
