Trigenea Sonder, 1845

Holotype species: Trigenea australis Sonder

Description: Upright polysiphonous thalli, up to 40 cm tall, with cylindrical branched axes, up to ~5 mm thick. Axes clothed in most regions (T. australis), or in more restricted areas (T. umbellata), with simple or branched setaceous branchlets, occurring on all sides. All apices radially oriented; main axes tips regularly forming setaceous branchlets of determinate growth; apices of determinate branchlets producing colored trichoblasts, more or less persistent, on most segments in a 1/4 spiral. 4 pericentral cells becoming thickly corticated in main axes and at least 3-4 layers of cortication in determinate branchlets. Reproductive structures on determinate branchlets. Cystocarps spheroid, ostiolate, sessile in mid to distal part of branchlet. Male reproductive structures unknown. Tetrasporangia in a spiral series, 1 per segment, in distal parts of branchlet; branched persistent trichoblasts on fertile segments.

Comments: Southern and Western Australia, subtidal. Records from N.Z. Antarctic Islands are in doubt (Papenfuss 1964, Hay et al. 1985).
