Scagelonema R.E.Norris & M.J.Wynne, 1969

Holotype species: Scagelonema parasiticum R.E.Norris & M.J.Wynne

Original publication and holotype designation: Norris, R.E. & Wynne, M.J. (1969 '1968'). Notes on marine algae of Washington and southern British Columbia. III. [reprint with author’s corrections]. Syesis 1: 133-146, 28 figs.

Description: Parasitic plants having a very small thallus, often globose, up to 0.5 mm in diameter and composed of many branching filaments. Axes not corticated, composed of large cells, each producing 2-3 ( sometimes 4) lateral pinnae having determinate growth. If four branches are in a whorl, one or two of them are rhizoids. One or two branches in a whorl may develop into a branch of the axis. Axis and its branches having limited growth, usually not growing into axes of more than 15 cells. Lowermost cells in the axes and some of the lower cells in pinnae producing long rhizoidal filaments that attach to the host plant. Pinnae unbranched or with pectinate branching, each branchlet having up to 3 or 4 cells and usually curving toward the axis. Terminal cells of branchlets rounded or frequently developing into tetrasporangia. Tetrasporangia cruciately divided. Male and female reproductive organs unknown.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
