Gigartinales et Rhodymeniales et tableau de la distribution des Chlorophycées, Phaeophycées et Rhodophycées de l'Archipel Malaisien. Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.

Taxonomic notes
Wynne & Schneider (2010: 296) note that this alleged parasite of Catanella impudica from Indonesia is known only in the vegetative state. Zuccarello (2008) considered similar galls on Catanella nipae from New South Wales to have been caused by fungal infection (probably an ascomycete) and in his opinion, the generic name Catenellocolax should be treated with caution until more collections from the type locality can be made. - (4 Jul 2011) - Wendy Guiry

Comments: A species very imperfectly known from sterile material, this is a minute (ca. 1 mm diam.) pustular growth on Catenella impudica (Montagne) J. Agardh from Java. It has not apparently been recorded since its original description, and the possibility that it represents a bacterial infection of the host should be considered.

Numbers of names and species: There is only one species or infraspecific name in the database at present.

Names: ('C' indicates a name that is accepted taxonomically; 'S' a homotypic or heterotypic synonym; 'U' indicates a name of uncertain taxonomic status, but which has been subjected to some verification nomenclaturally; 'P' indicates a preliminary AlgaeBase entry that has not been subjected to any kind of verification.
