Description: Thallus erect, somewhat cartilaginous, terete and irregularly laterally branched. Outer surfaces of indeterminate axes covered with short, monosiphonous, simple or sparingly branched, multicellular hairs (pseudolaterals?). Axial cells reportedly lacking periaxials, loosely corticated internally by large rhizoidal filaments with intermixed thinner, shorter-celled rhizoids. Outer cortex composed of 1-2 layers of densely packed, thin and thick rhizoids. Tetrasporangial stichidia on short monosiphonous stalks on indeterminate axes. Several tetrasporangia in whorls in each fertile segment, only partially enclosed by cover cells at maturity. Sexual plants unknown.

Information kindly contributed by C.W. Schneider but may now be outdated.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dasya.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Comments: Rare from the south coast of Australia, unknown since its collection in the last century. Endogenia may be congeneric with Nematophora J. Agardh (1890) which was based solely on three male plants. Additional study of the Agardh specimens is necessary for taxonomic and morphological clarification; for example, sympodial growth, a characteristic of the Dasyaceae in which it is tentatively placed, remains unreported.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
