Holotype species: Abbottella concinna Hollenberg

Original publication:Hollenberg, G.J. (1967). New genera in the Rhodomelaceae from the Central Pacific. Bulletin of the Southern California Academy of Sciences 66: 201-221, 15 figs.

Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Description: Polysiphonous thalli with prostrate and erect branch systems; prostrate system indeterminate, without trichoblasts; erect branches determinate, arising every 3-4 segments in two dorsal rows, and with a single very large branched trichoblast terminating the branch. All branches with 4 pericentrals but in erect branches two lateral pericentrals divide transversely and redivide to form lateral extensions, 2-3 cells wide. Continued division of the lateral pericentral cell derivatives in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the branch, combined with a transverse division of the resulting cells, forms a narrow monostromatic wing on the polysiphonous axis. Abaxial and adaxial pericentrals remain undivided. Pericentrals of the proximal 2 segments of upright branches remain undivided but the distal one sometimes bears a short secondary branchlet on the adaxial side. Reproductive cells unknown except possibly a single tetrasporangium was observed in the adaxial secondary erect branchlet.

Comments: Saxicolous, on dead coral in the Pacific Ocean at Raroia, Tuamoto Archipelago, and at Arno Atoll, Marshall Islands

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
