Holotype species: Lynkiella karuvalensis Varma

Currently accepted name for the type species: Veleroa karuvalensis (Varma) V.Krishnamurthy & P.C.Thomas

Original publication and holotype designation: Varma, R.P. (1960). A new genus of Lophothalieae from India. Proceedings of the National Institute of Sciences of India – Section B 52: 49-53, 14 figs, pls I, II.

Description: Erect polysiphonous thalli, attached by 2-5 celled rhizoids; with few polysiphonous branches but every segment with a trichoblast in 1/4 spiral in subsequent segments. Trichoblasts mostly unbranched, 6-7 cells long, pigmented and persistent, but especially distinctive in having middle cells in filament prominently enlarged, many times longer than broad; proximal cells narrow and distal cell mucronate. Pericentral cells 4, uncorticated. Tetrasporangia 1 per segment, in distal spiral series in branch. Cystocarps spheroidal, on suprabasal segments of trichoblast, ostiolate. Male plants unknown.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Veleroa.

Comments: Rare, on shells, southern India, sublittoral.
