Rhodolophia Kylin, 1956

Holotype species: Rhodolophia strobilifera (J.Agardh) Kylin

Currently accepted name for the type species: Erythrostachys strobilifera (J.Agardh) Womersley & Parsons

Original publication and holotype designation: Kylin, H. (1956). Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen. pp. i-xv, 1-673, 458 figs. Lund: C.W.K. Gleerups.

Description: Monopodial thalli, irregularly branched, with corticated polysiphonous organization, 7 pericentral cells; a branched trichoblast produced on each segment, in a spiral on axis, pigmented and persistent; polysiphonous branches developing in place of trichoblasts, radially placed on axis. Cortication extending almost to branch tips. Axis and pseudolateral with Y-shaped junction (Parsons 1975). Procarps on the second segment of a fertile branchlet; cystocarps ovoid to spheroid, with a prominent ostiole. Males unknown. Tetrasporangia borne in terminal series on clustered branches; one per segment in a spiral series, causing swelling of segments when mature.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.
