Original publication and holotype designation: Hartog, C. den (1970). The sea-grasses of the world. Verhandelingen der Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, Afdeling Natuurkunde, Tweede Reeks 59(1): [1-]6-275, 63 figs, 31 plates.
Taxonomic status: currently regarded as a synonym of Zostera.
Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Jacobs, S.W.L. & Lee, D.H. (2009). New combinations in Zostera (Zosteraceae). Telopea 12: 419-423, no figs.
Description: Leaves ligulate, lacking tannin cells; rhizome: sympodial. Monoecious, spathal sheath inflated, spadix stalked, retinacula always present.

Comments: There is some debate about the validity of this genus, with some arguing for the reinstatement of Zostera tasmanica into the genus Zostera in the subgenus Heterozostera (e.g., Soros-Pottruff & Posluszny, 1995).
