Description: Filamentous; filaments rarely solitary, usually joined in flattened mats or small compact strata, composed of gelatinous, longitudinally stratified or lamellated, usually colorless, rarely yellow-brown sheaths, which are sometimes diffluent at the margin, enclosing one or several, more or less parallel situated trichomes; old sheaths sometimes densely crosswise lamellated. Filaments sometimes branched (only sheaths). Trichomes cylindrical, usually unconstricted or slightly constricted at the crosswalls, sometimes slightly narrowed to the ends. Cells more or less isodiametric or slightly shorter or longer than wide; end cells cylindrical or conical, outside rounded, sometimes with thickened outer cell wall or with narrow calyptra. At crosswalls slight granulation. Trichomes usually motile (gliding) within sheaths. Cell division crosswise; daughter cells grow more or less into the original size before the next division. Reproduction by motile hormogonia; fragmentation of trichomes by help of necridic cells. Different species known from the periphyton in streaming, usually clear waters, or in lakes or marine littorals (growing on sand, stones or macro algae). Two species with calcareous precipitations in sheaths (growing in waters in limestone areas). One species was described from periphyton on water plants in tropical swamps (Angola).
