Description: Plants consisting of variously developed prostrate and erect systems of uniseriate filaments. Erect filaments alternately, oppositely or dichotomously branched. Branches whorled or irregular, with tips pointed, narrowly obtuse or bearing a multicellular hyaline hair. Prostrate filaments form creeping or rhizoidal system, occasionally aggregated into pseudoparenchymatous disc. Cells uninucleate, thick or thin-walled, cylindrical or swollen, each with a single parietal chloroplast and one to several pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by quadriflagellate zoospores of two sizes, micro- and macrozoospores. Sexual reproduction isogamous, by biflagellate or quadriflagellate gametes. Stigeoclonium common freshwater genus growing on a wide range of different surfaces. Species delimitation now based principally on features of the prostrate system and ones associated with germination of the zoospores. An extremely polymorphic genus most of whose members are best defined after growth in carefully defined culture conditions. Modern culture-based studies have led to recognition of just 3 species and suggestion that most of the 23 or more described in the earlier literature are merely environmentally-induced forms. All species so far investigated ultrastructurally have plasmodesmata and membranes closely appressed to pyrenoids. In a few species phycoplast observed.
