Description: Solitary cells to mostly colonial, spherical to amorphous thalli mostly less than 200 µm diameter, with one to many cells embedded in faintly to strongly stratified, hyaline, mucilaginous envelope. Cells often in tetrahedral to octahedral or otherwise regular arrays. Vegetative cells 5-25 x 7-20 µm, oval to spherical, with or without paired flagella, these apical and equal in length. Cell walls smooth and thin. Cells uninucleate with two apical contractile vacuoles. Chloroplast single, parietal and cup-shaped, without stigma in most cells; one (or occasionally two in C.lobata) pyrenoid per cell, basal or submedian in cell, spherical to oval and surrounded by starch sheath. Asexual reproduction by autospores or zoospores and colony fragmentation; 2-4-8-16 spores per sporangium. Spores released by dissolution and/or fragmentation of sporangial walls . Zoospores, 6-23 x 4-15 µm, usually without apical papilla (present in C. lobata). Nonflagellated hemizoospores with stigma often formed. In culture, zoospore production often associated with young cultures and autospore production with old cultures. Sexual reproduction unknown.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Masjuk, N.P. & Lilitska, G.G. (2011). Volvocales. In: Algae of Ukraine: diversity, nomenclature, taxonomy, ecology and geography. Volume 3: Chlorophyta. (Tsarenko, P.M., Wasser, S.P. & Nevo, E. Eds), pp. 218-225. Ruggell: A.R.A. Gantner Verlag K.-G..

Comments: Chlamydocapsa mostly planktonic in freshwater lakes, however, C. lobata from terrestrial moss and soil and C. mucifera attached to the wall of a fountain; genus essentially cosmopolitan, but most species have very restricted reported distributions in eastern Europe, Signy Island (Antarctica). Various species available in culture collections: C. ampla (UTEX 291, as Gloeocystis gigas), C. maxima (UTEX 166), and C. lobata (CCAP 9/1). Type species included by some authors in Gloeocystis. Species distinguished by differences in colony organization, cell size and shape and chloroplast morphology.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
