Description: Cells solitary within a thin, often indistinct mucilaginous envelope, rarely in temporary groups of 2-4 within an expanded mother cell wall. Cells oval or ellipsoid, 2-19 x 3.5-15 µm, with several (6 up to >30) spines of variable length (up to 75 µm) distributed over the entire cell surface. Chloroplast -- one in young cells, several in older cells -- parietal, with one, often indistinct pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by 2-4-8 autospores which are often temporarily retained within the markedly expanded mother cell wall. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Species of Franceia are of widespread occurrence in the freshwater plankton.
