Description: Thalli colonial or rarely unicellular, comprised of 4-8-16 or more detached cells dispersed in mucilaginous envelope. Cells long-cylindrical or fusiform and parallel in sheath. Cells 7-45 x 1-8 µm, with smooth cell walls and pointed or rounded ends. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal; pyrenoids apparently absent except in type species. Asexual reproduction by autospores, usually 4 (if 8, in two groups of 4 above each other) per sporangium, released by median rupture of cell wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Quadrigula planktonic or in littoral of lakes; reported from Europe, North America, Asia. Species distinguised based differences in cell size and shape. Quadrigula closely related to Ankistrodemus but differs in that cells remain attached in the latter genus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
