Description: Colonies without mucilage envelope, comprised of 2-16 biflagellate cells withoutcellulosic cell walls. Cells ovoid and radially arranged, with theirnarrow posterior ends at the center, their broadly rounded anterior ends atperiphery. Chloroplasts single, principally cup-shaped, with basalpyrenoid. Stigma filiform and located in anterior of cell.Contractile vacuoles apparently lacking.Asexualreproduction by longitudinal, binary cell division which increases the numberof cells in the colony. Individual cells may be released from colony and,by subsequent division, give rise to a new colony. Sexual reproduction isogamous. The quadriflagellate planozygote does not enter a restingphase (as is typical of motile, colonial chlorophytes), but gives rise directly to daughter colony. Site of meiosis in life history unclear.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
