Type designated in: Komárek, J. & Fott, B. (1983). Chlorophyceae (Grünalgen) Ordnung: Chlorococcales. Das Phytoplankton des Süsswassers. In: Das Phytoplankton des Süsswassers (Die Binnengewässer) XVI. 7. Teil 1. Hälfte. (Huber-Pestalozzi, G. Eds), pp. [1]-x, [1]-1044. Stuttgart: E. Schweizerbart'sche Verlangbuchhandlung (Nägele u. Obermiller).

Description: Thalli colonial with 2, 4, 8, 16 or more cells embedded in spherical to irregular structureless, gelatinous envelope. Cells oval to cylindrical, 5-25 x 3-20 &m, with smooth cell walls. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single and parietal, usually band-shaped to lobed but stellate in one species; pyrenoid single. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 2-4-8 spores per sporangium, released by fragmentation of sporangial walls into two or more parts, these remaining visible in colony envelope. Spores generally arranged in parallel in long axis of cell; when 4 spores these often tetrahedral. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Coenocystis planktonic in rivers and lakes in diverse habitats including peat bogs; reported from Europe and North and South America, probably cosmopolitan. Species distinguished base based on differences in chloroplast morphology and cell dimensions. Coenocystis estheriana retained by other authors in Siderocelis.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
