Heterothrichopsis Iyengar & Kanthamma, 1941

Holotype species: Heterothrichopsis viridis (M.O.P.Iyengar & Kanthamma) M.O.P.Iyengar & Kanthamma

Original publication and holotype designation: Iyengar, M.O.P. & Kanthamma, S. (1941). A note on Heterothrichopsis viridis gen. et sp. nov. Journal of the Indian Botanical Society 20: 105 only.

Description: Filaments 1-4 celled, unbranched and uniseriate. Cell wall thin and homogeneous. Cells cylindrical with rounded ends, and with central nucleus and 1-4(-8) parietal, plate-like to discoid chloroplasts, each containing one or more pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by aplanospores. Multiplication of filaments by cell division and fragmentation into 1-2 celled portions. Method of sexual reproduction unknown. Heterotrichopsis recorded only once as spontaneously growing alga in culture prepared from soil collected at Madras (India). Heterotrichopsis closely related to Stichococcus, differing in possession of pyrenoids. Based on cell and chloroplast morphology Heterotrichopsis strongly resembles the xanthophycean, Heterothrix, differing from it by presence of pyrenoids with a distinct starch shell. G. M. Lokhorst

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
