Holotype species: Actinella punctata F.W.Lewis

Original publication and holotype designation: Lewis, F.W. (1864). On some new and singular intermediate forms of Diatomaceae. Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 15: 336-346.

Fossil: This is a genus of fossil species, or a genus with a fossil type species, or a genus the type species of which was originally described as a fossil.

Description: Frustules asymmetrical, more or less heteropolar on the apical axis, linear-arcuate, sometimes adhering at the narrower (foot) pole into stellate clusters. Girdle view heteropolar and often asymmetric. Transapical axis more or less heteropolar. Polar nodules present and simple; pseudoraphe present, often indistinct, central nodule lacking. Raphe simple, limited to the ventral angle of the polar parts, often very short. Punctate-striate, often showing marginal beads or delicate spines on the margins. A large pore often present at the apex of the frustule.
