Chrysonephele L.D.Pipes, P.A.Tyler & G.F.Leedale, 1989

Holotype species: Chrysonephele palustris L.D.Pipes, P.A.Tyler & G.F.Leedale

Original publication and holotype designation: Pipes, L., Tyler, P.A. & Leedale, G.F. (1989). Chrysonephele palustris gen. et sp. nov. (Chrysophyceae), a new colonial chrysophyte from Tasmania. Beih. Nov. Hedw. 95: 81-97.

Description: Cells arranged superficially in large more or less spherical, gelatinous colonies, which are free-floating or attached to vegetation. Cells nonmotile, but with actively beating, heterokont flagella. Short flagellum has a paraflagellar rod and a flagellar swelling (photoreceptor), in juxtaposition to a stigma located in a lobe of the chloroplast. Long flagellum also has a swelling with a lamellated structure, possibly a second photoreceptor. In other respects the cell is of typical ochromonad organization. Nutrition both phototrophic and phagotrophic. Reproduction, swarmer stages and stomatocysts not known. Only recorded from an ephemeral swamp in Tasmania. The presence of a putative additional photoreceptor on the long flagellum might represent a possible evolutionary link with the Eustigmatophyceae. So, even though the organism is unquestionably chrysophycean in its cell construction, the authors find that this feature prohibits an allocation to any of the existing orders or families

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
