Description: Cells colorless, borne at the ends of the terminal branches of a dichotomously-stalked corymbose colony. Stalks hyaline, erect, rigid, sometimes encrusted with iron compounds; the branches at the ramifications usually regular and equal in length. Individual cells irregularly pyriform or triangular, with an obliquely truncate anterior margin. Two flagella, one long and one short; 1-2 contractile vacuoles anteriorly or posteriorly located. One species with an inconspicuous stigma. Ingestion of solid food particles at all parts of the periphery. Division by longitudinal fission. Stomatocysts known for one species. Sexual reproduction not observed. Found in fresh water in various places worldwide, one species in brackish water aquaria and basins at the coast of the Black Sea
